Competition policy and the financial/banking crisis: taking action
Competition policy has a central but limited role to play in overcoming the financial crisis.
Our areas of direct involvement are state aid funding and merger control. The College of Commissioners has granted new powers to ensure that rapid decisions are made to protect our future. As an example of the work we are doing we gave formal approval to a rescue aid package for Bradford and Bingley bank in less than 24 hours. This followed urgent informal discussions with the UK authorities on how to structure the package in order to minimize distortions for other banks. Read more on the website...
